The story of Pagani’s Utopia Coupé and its journey into Pocher legend

How do you improve on perfection? That was the question Horacio Pagani asked himself when designing the Utopia Coupé. With feedback from previous customers and a desire to create a timeless design, he turned his back on the trends of the time, shunning hybrid designs and heavy batteries in favour of a simple, curvaceous car that amplified the joy of driving.

Creating Utopia

In 2022, his dream was realised. The Utopia Coupé achieved greater downforce and reduced drag without the need for endless spoilers. The aerodynamic design combined with the Mercedes-derived AMG-developed 851HP twin-turbo V12 engine made specially for this car created a vehicle that was simple, light and embodied the pure joy of driving.

Like all Pagani vehicles, the Utopia Coupé is made of a carbon monocoque frame, created using proprietary composite materials like Carbo-Titanium HP62 G2 and Carbo-Traix HP62. The double wishbone suspension is made from aluminium alloy, while the shiftable seven-speed manual gearbox (or automated single clutch transmission) puts the driver in full control of the car’s movement. The smoothest driving experience comes from the forged wheels with a turbine-shaped carbon fibre extractor. This draws hot air away from the brakes so there is less turbulence under the body.

Leather straps on the front and rear clamshell panels, butterfly doors and staggered wheel sizes bring that inspired Pagani energy to the look. With a dry weight of 1,280kg (2,822lb), the car boasts Pirelli tyres with large tyres – 21” at the front and 22” at the back.

The curvaceous silhouette of the car offers a timeless aesthetic inspired by the 1950s. The premium experience continues inside the car, with hand-stitched leather and intricate aluminium accents. There are minimal display screens, analogue instruments and easy-to-read dials. Everything is about comfort and efficiency, ensuring a pleasurable driving experience.

And of course, you can’t have comfort without safety. Every Utopia Coupé car is built to the most stringent safety standards, passing more than 50 severe crash tests to adhere to global certifications. It also passes the strictest emissions requirements!

With more power, increased performance, a better structure and improved aerodynamics, this car sold out faster than Pagani could make it. And with a production schedule of only 99 vehicles, it was as rare as it was impressive.

About Pagani

The Utopia Coupé marked the third decade of success for Pagani. Ever since the first Pagani Zonda car made in 1999, the brand has been known for its obsessive pursuit of perfection, with each new model bringing something new to the luxury hypercar experience.

Based in San Cesario sui Panaro, the company employs 180 staff who undertake all the research, designing and testing, before meticulously crafting each vehicle by hand. The team make 50 cars a year.

Horacio Pagani was building cars from a young age, carving them from balsa wood and learning about finishing techniques in his local model shop. He was born in Casilda, Argentina in 1955 and some of those models are displayed in the Pagani Museum in Modena.

When he was 14, he was gifted a Sachs Televel engine, which he turned into a minibike. And just before he finished school, he took a plastic body kit and turned it into a Dune-Buggy, using a Renault Dauphine he found in a scrapyard.

By 1978, the Horacio Pagani Design company was born. The Alpine caravan was an instant hit and spurred Horacio on to build his first F2 car. Augustin Beamonte made his race debut in the car in 1979.

His success took him to Italy, where he started working with Lamborghini. The Countach Evoluzione was the first car made entirely out of composite materials, spearheaded by Horacio. But few of his ideas were realised after this. Frustrated, and with the outbreak of the Gulf War suspending works, Horacio took his research and left, starting work on his own dream supercar.

The Zonda C12 was launched in 1999 and the legend of Pagani began. Zonda represented Act I of the company’s fortunes, evolving over the following 12 years in very small batches. Act II began in 2011, with the Huayra, which used the latest technology and research to create a futuristic car. And then, in 2022, the Utopia Coupé marked Act III.
